Inspection, assessment and repair following severe flood damage of heritage railway bridge

Bridge 35 is a 4-span wrought iron underbridge carrying the Peak Rail heritage railway over the River Derwent in Matlock, Derbyshire. In December 2019 ECSL were called out to a rapid response bridge inspection after Bridge 35 suffered severe flood damage.

Project Overview

In December 2019 ECSL were called out to a rapid response bridge inspection after Bridge 35 suffered severe flood damage. ECSL had previously undertaken an inspection for assessment, structural assessment in accordance with Network Rail standard NR/GN/CIV/025 Assessment of Railway Underbridges, and feasibility study in accordance with Eurocode design standards for a new cycle path over the bridge so knew the history of the structure. The pier bracing had been ripped away by debris as a result of large volumes of fast flowing flood water.

Our Solution

ECSL inspected the structure, instructed a scour survey, completed calculations to check structural safety and then continued to monitor the bridge under load during December 2019 to ensure the safety of the Santa Trains running over the bridge.

ECSL then led the repair of the new bracing, managing the sub-contractors, site access and assurance process. Our team also managed the interface between the ORR, Environment Agency and the Client to ensure all parties were aware of project progress.
